So we are helping Petula redo this room downstairs (she is going to use it for our classroom for the English classes). It has been an interesting experience. We went to several different stores to look at paint colors for the walls, several different stores to look for carpet, several different stores to look for furniture. Picking out the paint and the carpet was the easy part. Now trying to find the right furniture on the other hand... that was quite the adventure! Who would have thought that trying to find a simple coffee table (in a country where like everyone has coffee tables) would be so hard???? We sure didn't. I actually lost count how many different furniture stores we went to trying to find one - more than 7, I know that. Wow. We wanted a plain wood table - no glass because kids use that room as well and that would just be asking for trouble. Good news though, we did end up finding one.
The room was painted last weekend, so today we all worked on putting it together. And let me tell you, it was quite entertaining!! Haha. For starters the guys trying to get the light fixtures set up and working properly. Or deciding that the curtains we got to cover the windows needed to be ironed... But then they didn't need to be ironed because we weren't going to put them up because the pole that holds them wasn't screwed into the wall all the way and they didn't want it to fall... But then they changed their minds and the curtains needed to be ironed because they decided that they were going to go up... And in the end the curtains went up (Neno screwed the thing into the wall so it wouldn't fall on us) but they weren't ironed. Then Neno decided that it would look better if the curtains were pulled off to the side instead of hanging straight down. So Petula cut strips of construction paper and we ended up using scotch tape to hold them in place.
Oh, I just want to add that while a bunch of us were working hard to get the room put together and cleaning and getting stuff ready for the English group Bobo and Miki were sitting in chairs eating chips just watching. Well, not just watching - I'm pretty sure they were probably making fun of Neno. Those boys... They actually did help some. =)
So part of getting ready for the English class was cutting out playing boards for a conversation game. AND we got to color in spaces!!! I was pretty excited about that - I love coloring. Lol. While I was working on one of my boards Bobo asked if he could help, and I decided that I would let him work on my other board. However I made sure to let him know that I was trusting him to make it look good and to not mess it up (it turned out very good btw - he did a good job). Then Miki put himself in charge of the colors. He held on to the crayon box and handed out whatever color any of us needed... and also made sure to take back the crayons we weren't using anymore - I was accused of hoarding colors. All the boards turned out good... nice and colorful.
Then Bobo got to vacuum the room, and I think he enjoyed that task a little too much ;)
So our first English class was supposed to be tonight (actually it was supposed to be last week but it got postponed to this week so we could have the room finished). BUT it didn't happen. The people who were supposed to come were either out of town, going to be late, or were unreachable. We are going to try for Tuesday next week - let's hope people don't skip out again.
This evening I went out with Vedrana... we went out for tea. I really enjoyed it because it gave me a chance to talk to her and get to know her better. Plus it was cool cuz we talked about some cultural differences between Bosnia and the States (like schooling for example... here they have their primary schooling, and then they have high school. But their high schools are more like trade schools - you take and entrance exam to get in and you basically finish with a degree).
Today I had to miss a very important event... Hannah's birthday!!! My girls are growing up soooo fast - they are already in high school, soon they will be driving. Then I'll blink and they will be high school graduates getting ready to go off to college. I absolutely LOVE being their leader and I miss not being there at youth group for them right now, but I know they are doing fine. Anyways, this morning I e-mailed Hannah a little happy birthday letter and attached these pictures for her:
